He rose to fame playing the Spartan King Leonidas in the fantasy war movie 300.

However, Gerard Butler has a distinctly different look for his latest role as he plays the part of Viking leader Stoick the Vast in movie How To Train Your Dragon. 

The Scottish actor will star alongside Mason Thames, who plays young dragon rider Hiccup, whiled Nico Parker plays Hiccup’s love interest Astrid.

A trailer for the new movie shows Butler with a long beard wielding an axe and staring out over the bow of a Viking long ship.

And while Butler wore a costume that consisted of little more than a cod piece and a cape in 300, his latest role saw him engulfed in so many layers that the glue for his prosthetic beard started to melt.

However, the Paisley-born star said the heat was welcome given the chilly temperatures as they filmed in Northern Ireland in winter.

In an interview with Collider, Butler said: ‘Yes, it was very cold and kind of miserable because we went at the worst time. It was December, or really starting in January.’

He added: ‘But I had seven layers, thick layers, and a thick beard, and then I had a kind of bearskin or wolfskin over it.’

Universal Pictures has debuted the first look at the upcoming live-action adaptation of the beloved movie How to Train Your Dragon!

The teaser trailer gives us our first look at Mason Thames as Hiccup and Gerard Butler as Chief Stoick the Vast, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise.
